Birthday Group-August 2019

On THURSDAY, July 11, we celebrated the birthdays of Bobbie and Jerry Ankenbrandt, Jim Brunner, BJ Lahr, Mary Ann and Ed Meinardus and Patricia Sax at Clara, a restaurant in Carlsbad Village.  Our group took up an entire wall which had no impact at all on the fellowship throughout the group.  We contributed one hundred ninety-nine ($199) dollars to Birth Choice.

We’ll celebrate the birthdays of Pastor Augie, Gary Reiswig, Dave Taylor, Ken Voertman and Gary Wilson in our first all-male birthday celebration on THURSDAY, August 29 at Dini’s Bistro, 3290 Carlsbad Boulevard at 11:30 a.m.

Lunches range from ten to eighteen ($10-18) dollars.  In addition to your lunch, we request a one dollar contribution per celebrant which will go to Del/Mar Solana Beach Optimist Club for their Rady’s Children’s Hospital project.

Everyone is welcome to join us but you do need a reservation with the Birthday Coordinator, Jo Voertman, jvbytheseaagain@gmail.com, 760-721-6674.

Free to be Faithful-August 2019

Free to be Faithful (a.k.a. Salt & Light) is dedicated to raising awareness within our Christian Community that we have a responsibility to be informed and to participate in the Civil arena; most importantly to vote for candidates that share our Christian beliefs. As individual Christians this responsibility must be taken as seriously as any other duty in our lives. How can you love your neighbor and yet vote for someone who will pass legislation allowing your neighbors daughter to have an abortion without parents’ consent?

A recent article on the Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty website (part of the LCMS Free to be Faithful program) talked about a specific legislation that deals with public funding of abortions. Their guidance is this: “Now is the time for us to speak as a moral people, refusing to incentivize a procedure that, even though legal, should be sparingly used. The debate about the Hyde Amendment won’t let us hide anymore!”. The Church, for their part, must encourage members to get informed and be involved.

Hyde Amendment: A legislative provision barring the use of federal funds to pay for abortion except to save the life of the woman, or if the pregnancy arises from incest or rape. First passed in 1976

Isaiah 5:20: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” – Dan Bitner

Bell Choir Resumes Aug 14

Rehearsals resume on Wednesday August 14th (time TBD). Ring in Worship about once per month – alternating between services.  Ken and Kay Boland have rung for about 30 years now and have taught many people how to ring. It is helpful if you have read music, but if not, be willing to learn. You would ring basically 2 notes – one in each hand. So if you can tell your right and left apart, and count to 4, and you like to laugh, you’ll fit right in. Contact Kay for more information.

Free to be Faithful-June 2019

Miracles and Prayers – That was the theme of our 2nd and 4th Sunday 9:45 AM studies in April. This followed studies about the founding of our country. In those studies, we talked about the idea that America is ‘exceptional’ because of the governing principals embodied in our Declaration of Independence: 1) Acknowledges that there is a Divine Creator and that all men are created equal. 2) We are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights. 3) The primary purpose of government is to protect these rights.

We have seen the dangers when we ignore those governing principals. Not protecting life at first seemed unthinkable (and illegal), but then it’s permitted by law / legislation and we end up with it being mandatory including government enforcement. In a self-governing society, we need to do a better job of having our Christian voice heard when we choose our Representatives.

For us, we want to help celebrate life. To honor mothers and the children who richly bless our nation, Redeemer dedicated the month of May as a Birth Choice support month. Birth Choice is an organization that provides ultrasound services to help a woman experiencing an unplanned pregnancy to know the human life that has been created within their womb. Statistics show that after seeing the ultrasound, 90%+ will choose life for their child. For all of you who made donations to this fundraising effort – Thank You! Want to know more about Birth Choice: https://birthchoice.net/

For June, we will continue our Miracles and Prayers study, with some new examples of how the Founders employed prayer to sustain them during the dark days of the American Revolution. Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

Birthday Celebrants – June 2019

We celebrated the birthdays of Stella Berrier, Russ Hanthorn, Linda Staehr, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Wickstrand on THURSDAY, May 2 at 11:30 a.m. at the Hunter Steak House in Oceanside. It was a typical cool, May gray day but the fellowship was as warm as ever.

We contributed two hundred ninety-five ($295) dollars to the Special Olympics of Southern California.

Our next lunch will be in July so watch for the details. Everyone is welcome to join us but you do need a reservation with the Birthday Coordinator, Jo Voertman, jvbythesea@cox.net, 760-721-6674.

Bridge Group – April 2019

The fourth Friday in March, the 22nd day, was a lovely day when we gathered for bridge at Carlsbad By the Sea, home of Carolyn Schmaltz.  We welcomed a  guest player, Sue Vaughn,  a recent newcomer to Carlsbad from Bakersfield.

High scorer was Arlyn Schmad and in second place, Faye Bacon. We welcome players who may like to play regularly or as substitutes.  This is a group of women who also travel so Substitute Players are ‘gifts’ every month.

April 26, we will begin play at 11 AM, at the home of Alice Lehmann.  If this is of interest to you please let me know. Welcome to this group of Women who meet in Christian Fellowship in member’s homes for a “Bridge Play Day”. Faye Bacon, Bridge Coordinator baconfaye3@gmail.com 760.707.6677

Salt & Light – April 2019

In April, Miracles and Prayer will be the theme for our 2nd and 4th Sunday 9:45 AM studies. Join us to hear about these miracles from our founding era and hear the prayers we will offer in thanksgiving.  In May, once again we have the opportunity to celebrate Mother’s Day. As we reflect on the love and reverence we hold for mothers, we think about their sacrifice for and dedication to their children. Both scripture and society proclaim a child’s importance, and you don’t have to look hard to find statements affirming that:
  • Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.
  • Matthew 19:14 But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
  • Pope John Paul II “A society will be judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members”
  • Mahatma Ghandi “A nation’s greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members.”
  • Last Speech of Hubert H. Humphrey “…the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; those who are in the shadows of life; the sick, the needy and the handicapped.”

To honor mothers and the children who richly bless our nation, your Free to be Faithful / Salt & Light group is asking Redeemer to make the month of May a Birth Choice support month. Birth Choice is an organization that provides ultrasound services to help a woman experiencing an unplanned pregnancy to know the human life that has been created within their womb. Statistics show that after seeing the ultrasound, 90%+ will choose life for their child.  We would like to help Birth Choice expand the operation of their mobile facility such that they are able to serve more moms to-be. Keep an eye out for material that will provide details on this wonderful service and our opportunity to support them. To further amplify the importance of the work Birth Choice is doing, we will be providing a video-based study on life after abortion during the 9:45 AM Sunday fellowship time in May. This study talks about all aspects of what has become all too common in America, along with alternatives and a hopeful message for the future.  Contact Dan Bitner or Jerry Meyer for more information.

Two Table Bridge Group-Mar 2019

The New Year for the group began with a mutually agreed upon change as we recognized returning to our respective homes on a Friday afternoon left much to be desired.  The traffic is becoming heavier and timing is of the essence.

We met on the 4th Friday of the month,  February 22,  at 11 AM and we chose Snacks and Bridge rather than Dessert at mid-noon and it is a good plan.  Anyone interested in playing bridge is welcome and letting the Bridge Coordinator know is the only requirement.  We meet in members homes and we always need substitute players.

Snacks were served for everyone to enjoy at the home of Faye Bacon and playing bridge began upon the arrival of all players.  Ruth Russell scored high score followed by second high scorer, the hostess.  Alice Lehmann rejoiced because she went home with her early-on investment and we understand Buck was impressed.

March 22nd, we will play at the home of Carolyn Schmaltz at 11 AM. Why not give yourself a treat, if you like bridge,  call: Faye Bacon at 760-707-6677 or e-mail baconfaye3@gmail.com.  I look forward to hearing from you; we come together as friends and we enjoy the Christian Fellowship and Friendships as a result.

Birthday Group – March 2019

We celebrated the birthdays of Buck Lehmann, Rachelle Iadicicco and Evonne Salyer on Valentine’s Day, February 14 at Dini’s Bistro.  It was the day of the major storm and we stayed dry despite rainwater seeping in from the patio.  A good time was had by all, especially the birthday celebrants themselves.  We contributed one hundred ($100) dollars to Saint Jude’s Research Hospital. And we meet again at Dini’s Bistro, by the Sea in Carlsbad, 3290 Carlsbad Boulevard, to be exact, on THURSDAY, March 28, at 11:30 a.m. to celebrate the birthdays of George Ann Barnes, Dave Berrier Louise Dockerty (unable to attend) Di Haarmeyer, Rich Sherwood and Gayle Timken.

Lunches range from twelve to eighteen ($12-18) dollars.  In addition to your lunch we request a one dollar contribution per celebrant which will go to Dogs for Better Lives, a facility that trains dogs to help hearing impaired and/or autistic people.

Everyone is welcome to join us but you do need a reservation with the Birthday Coordinator, Jo Voertman, jvbythesea@cox.net, 760-721-6674.
