Speaking with the Authority of God.
In this morning’s study we look at the readings for Sunday, January 31, 2021, and we see a recurring theme – Speaking with the Authority of God.
Note: The Jerusalem Council did speak to the issue of food sacrificed to idols (you can see Acts 15:29). This wasn’t in contradiction to what Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 8, but more of a recognition that this was in fact a problem for the church. Their response was not to promote legalism, but rather to keep peace in the church. An article I found on the internet that discusses this is: https://www.gotquestions.org/food-sacrificed-idols.html

Heeding God’s Call.
In this study we look at the readings for Sunday, January 24, 2021, and we see a recurring theme – Heeding God’s Call.
  • Jonah 3:1-5, 10 – Jonah resists, then heed’s God’s call.
  • 1 Corinthians 7:29-35 – God’s call on Christians is greater than worldly pursuits.
  • Mark 1:14-20 – Jesus calls His disciples – not just for “information” but for life “formation.”

In the video, I referenced these topics:

  • The city of Nineveh, was in the Assyrian empire,; the ruins of which are in modern day Mosul in Northern Iraq.  Scholars estimate that in Biblical times it was 1800 acres (2.8 square miles) with a population of about 120,000.  It was the largest city in the world until it fell in about 612 BC. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nineveh).
  • Jonah preached there in about the 8th century BC, and it’s possible that he was sent to the greater Nineveh area which would have been larger and more populous.

I referenced these verses of Jesus:

  • “Jesus replied, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.'” – Luke 9:62
  • “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’ – Luke 14:19
And student desks can be made of wood, laminate or hard plastic! 😉
