Free to be Faithful-August 2019

Free to be Faithful (a.k.a. Salt & Light) is dedicated to raising awareness within our Christian Community that we have a responsibility to be informed and to participate in the Civil arena; most importantly to vote for candidates that share our Christian beliefs. As individual Christians this responsibility must be taken as seriously as any other duty in our lives. How can you love your neighbor and yet vote for someone who will pass legislation allowing your neighbors daughter to have an abortion without parents’ consent?
A recent article on the Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty website (part of the LCMS Free to be Faithful program) talked about a specific legislation that deals with public funding of abortions. Their guidance is this: “Now is the time for us to speak as a moral people, refusing to incentivize a procedure that, even though legal, should be sparingly used. The debate about the Hyde Amendment won’t let us hide anymore!”. The Church, for their part, must encourage members to get informed and be involved.

Hyde Amendment: A legislative provision barring the use of federal funds to pay for abortion except to save the life of the woman, or if the pregnancy arises from incest or rape. First passed in 1976

Isaiah 5:20: “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” – Dan Bitner

Free to be Faithful-June 2019

Miracles and Prayers – That was the theme of our 2nd and 4th Sunday 9:45 AM studies in April. This followed studies about the founding of our country. In those studies, we talked about the idea that America is ‘exceptional’ because of the governing principals embodied in our Declaration of Independence: 1) Acknowledges that there is a Divine Creator and that all men are created equal. 2) We are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights. 3) The primary purpose of government is to protect these rights.
We have seen the dangers when we ignore those governing principals. Not protecting life at first seemed unthinkable (and illegal), but then it’s permitted by law / legislation and we end up with it being mandatory including government enforcement. In a self-governing society, we need to do a better job of having our Christian voice heard when we choose our Representatives.
For us, we want to help celebrate life. To honor mothers and the children who richly bless our nation, Redeemer dedicated the month of May as a Birth Choice support month. Birth Choice is an organization that provides ultrasound services to help a woman experiencing an unplanned pregnancy to know the human life that has been created within their womb. Statistics show that after seeing the ultrasound, 90%+ will choose life for their child. For all of you who made donations to this fundraising effort – Thank You! Want to know more about Birth Choice:
For June, we will continue our Miracles and Prayers study, with some new examples of how the Founders employed prayer to sustain them during the dark days of the American Revolution. Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

Salt & Light – April 2019

In April, Miracles and Prayer will be the theme for our 2nd and 4th Sunday 9:45 AM studies. Join us to hear about these miracles from our founding era and hear the prayers we will offer in thanksgiving.  In May, once again we have the opportunity to celebrate Mother’s Day. As we reflect on the love and reverence we hold for mothers, we think about their sacrifice for and dedication to their children. Both scripture and society proclaim a child’s importance, and you don’t have to look hard to find statements affirming that:
  • Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.
  • Matthew 19:14 But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
  • Pope John Paul II “A society will be judged on the basis of how it treats its weakest members”
  • Mahatma Ghandi “A nation’s greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members.”
  • Last Speech of Hubert H. Humphrey “…the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; those who are in the shadows of life; the sick, the needy and the handicapped.”

To honor mothers and the children who richly bless our nation, your Free to be Faithful / Salt & Light group is asking Redeemer to make the month of May a Birth Choice support month. Birth Choice is an organization that provides ultrasound services to help a woman experiencing an unplanned pregnancy to know the human life that has been created within their womb. Statistics show that after seeing the ultrasound, 90%+ will choose life for their child.  We would like to help Birth Choice expand the operation of their mobile facility such that they are able to serve more moms to-be. Keep an eye out for material that will provide details on this wonderful service and our opportunity to support them. To further amplify the importance of the work Birth Choice is doing, we will be providing a video-based study on life after abortion during the 9:45 AM Sunday fellowship time in May. This study talks about all aspects of what has become all too common in America, along with alternatives and a hopeful message for the future.  Contact Dan Bitner or Jerry Meyer for more information.

Free to be Faithful – March 2019

The Free to be Faithful / Salt & Light group recognizes and rejoices in the fact that this great country of ours began by first humbling themselves before God. No other nation had proclaimed that our inalienable rights came from God and not man. Secondly, that our birth and growth as a nation has been richly blessed by God. And third, that our cherished nation is today turning away from God’s Truths. So, what is at stake? Educator and historical author during the American Revolution, Jedidiah Morse, aptly put his finger on it when he said, “In proportion as the genuine effects of Christianity are diminished in any nation, in the same proportion will the people of that nation recede from the blessings of genuine freedom. All efforts made to destroy the foundations of our Holy Religion ultimately tend to the subversion also of our political freedom and happiness. Whenever the pillars of Christianity shall be overthrown, our present republican forms of government and all the blessings which flow from them must fall with them.” The Free to be Faithful / Salt & Light group currently is offering enlightening presentations of the connections between government and God’s Truths every 2nd and 4th Sundays between 1st and 2nd service. Make a habit of joining us regularly. Contact Jerry or Dan for more information.

Free to Be Faithful – Feb 2019

We are happy to report that the 2019 San Diego ‘Walk for Life’ was a great success; the attendance count I saw was over 4,000, and it included a lot of younger people who represent the hope for our future. Some of us from Salt & Light attended and we were able to talk to many of the organizations who support the pro-life cause. One such organization is Birth Choice, and they will be presenting at our LWML meeting in February.
We have started our twice a month video based study and plan to continue that program on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. January was a discussion of what makes America exceptional. The bottom line is that it is a result of our governing principals that acknowledges there is a fixed moral law, that our inalienable rights come from a Divine Creator, and that government’s role is to protect those rights. Beyond that, the government derives their just powers from the consent of the governed. Stay tuned for next month’s topic.

Free to Be Faithful / Salt & Light

The Salt & Light group has for several years been presenting opportunities to share with you some of the undeniable relationships between God and the birth of this great nation, the United States. Beginning in January we will be sharing a DVD presentation called Exceptional. America is truly a blessed nation. In so many ways she represents the exception rather than the rule among nations of the world. Our exceptionalism encompasses great diversity of race, ethnicity, and religion and has benefitted every American. However, there is a reason why we are exceptional and we invite you to find out why. This presentation will be shown between services on January 27. We hope you will join us.
See Dan Bitner or Jerry Meyer for details.

Free to Be Faithful

Between 55 and 60 million innocent lives have been lost over the years since Roe v Wade. Same sex marriages are now affirmed by law accompanied by the threats that those who do not affirm this ‘new reality’ could lose and have lost jobs, freedoms and more. Constitutional rights of religion protected by the 1st Amendment are under constant attack by some in and out of government. What is the answer to reversing the trend of making laws that go against God’s Law and appointing judges that uphold these decisions? Elect God fearing men and women who have the religious and moral courage to stand against these attacks. The Salt & Light group believes that it is a Christian’s responsibility to know the biblical issues of the day; what the candidates have said or done on those issues; vote accordingly. To that end the Salt & Light group will be hosting 2 presentations based on the dvd “Anthem for a Nation” on Sunday, Oct 14 and “The Biblical Case for Cultural Engagement” on Oct 28. Both presentations will take place from 9:45 – 10:45 am in the Fellowship Hall. In addition we offer this prayer;

Heavenly Father, we bring the needs of our government before You and ask You to bless our nation through Godly leaders. We ask that for our President and his Cabinet, Justices of the Supreme Court, members of the Senate and House of Representatives, and all elected officials of the state and municipalities, that they receive wisdom from You to act in obedience to that wisdom and for the power of God to flow in their lives. We ask this is Jesus name. Amen
